Brass Instruments
The development of Brass Instruments throughout the centuries is basically completed. However, every year something new pops up
and disappears just as fast. Brass Instruments are made from brass. Different blends of other metals may change the sounds, durability or color of the brass. A silver instrument
is, in most cases, silver plated or parts of the instrument, like the bell, are made with solid sterling silver.
Today you see a lot of instruments in all colors, painted or entirely made of plastic. Quite frankly, these are great for a circus or clowns. Please keep it traditional. You will
look professional with the right instrument, just like the colors for a performing Band or Orchestra: black and white or in uniform.
Here is a very short description of the instruments your beginner student will select.

Common Sense Tips for Brass Instruments
1. |
Almost every beginner sounds quite awful on these instruments. This improves
quickly. The secret is play, play, play and play some more! Your lips get better
with practice and so does the sound!
|
2. |
To improve your sound, as many professionals do, take your mouthpiece with you
wherever you go. Take every chance you get to make “buzzing” sounds.
|
3. |
Every Brass Instrument has a “Water key”. Please use it as often as possible.
Your band room floor is used to it. At home, you may want to use it over a
towel on the floor.

4. |
Additional tips for “care taking” can be found under Rentals, Cleaning &
Maintenance and repair.

A scholarship is always measured by how long, how serious and how good
you play. If you do the job, you may get a scholarship with any instrument.
|
6. |
Don’t jump from instrument to instrument or mouthpiece to mouthpiece;
it gets you nowhere.
