• Woodwind Instruments  •

An Alp Horn is entirely made from wood, but it is a Brass Instrument. The beautiful Saxophone is made from Brass, but it is a Woodwind Instrument. To make it easier to understand, Woodwinds need a reed (except the Flute). A Brasswind instrument has a metal mouthpiece.

Common Sense Tips for Woodwind Instruments

Flute

With a good beginner Flute, you may go all the way to Professional. This is the foundation for Open Hole or Piccolo Flutes. You won’t need the Piccolo Flute until High School or not at all. Open Hole is a step up.

Clarinet

Begin with a regular (Soprano) Clarinet. The is, again, the foundation you will need for other Clarinets and Saxophones. The Clarinet opens the way to about 15 other Reed Instruments in this family.

Saxophone

If you like this beauty, make sure your hand and fingers are large enough. You must be able to hold it correctly. It is heavy and a neck strap is a must!

Oboe

The Oboe is a double reed instrument. It may be a little harder to get started. Otherwise, like any other beginner instrument - practice, practice, practice!

The myth is wrong that you will automatically get a scholarship playing this instrument. The measurement for a scholarship is how good you are playing. You can show up with a brand new, Fully Conservatory Oboe, but if you can’t play “dud ally squat”, stop dreaming. Nothing is for free.

The Oboe is not a marching instrument. It is not tunable. Notice in an orchestra, the Oboe sounds an “A” and all the instruments have to tune after the Oboe’s lead.
